Many people are unaware of the advances in technology within general practice. Over the past 10 years the use of Information Management and Technology (IM&T) by GP Practices has increased to include:
- Electronic patient records
- Electronic referrals (previously Choose & Book now E-Referrals)
- Electronic prescriptions
- Online test requesting (including imaging such as x-ray and ultrasound)
- Summary Care Record
- Electronic document management and transfer
- SMS (text) Messaging service
and more recently further initiatives to improve online access for patients which include:
- booking and cancellingappointments
- ordering repeat medications
- changing your contact details
- viewing your medical record
Along with the introduction of the IT, new staff roles have been put into place to implement, monitor and enhance these services.
Reception and clinical staff are the familiar faces of the practice but did you know that there are more staff working in the behind the scenes helping to facilitate the above as well ensuring the smooth provision of services.
